Chromatic Variation in Late Antique Rainbows

چکیده
Depictions of rainbows in late antique and early Byzantine art follow the normal sequence spectral colours, only some bows exclude blue violet. Another characteristic feature rainbow is inclusion white non-spectral hue pink. In order to investigate chromatic characteristics, I use as case studies comparatively few extant images third- sixth-century date from Thessaloniki, Constantinople, Rome Ravenna. The rainbows, depicted a floor mosaic, three illuminated manuscripts monumental wall mosaic decorations, are either part narratives or rainbow-patterned borders used frame other scenes. To throw light on variations, ancient descriptions brought into discussion representations seen relation meteorological research. propose that two visual traditions, both which can be traced back Hellenistic period grounded scientific One sunrise/sunset ranges red green. argue exclusion blue/violet may due its being more difficult see against sky, wavelength violet closest boundary beyond coloured tends look black. variant type, found especially church mosaics, covers whole spectrum via green well pink white. suggest hues understood gradations sometimes observed natural bow band provides highlight, combined with silver line indicates strong luminance.

متن کاملBone traumas in late antique populations from Croatia.
We present the results of the analyses of traumatic bone injuries in two Late Antique (3r to 5th century AD) skeletal samples from Croatia: Zadar--located on the eastern Adriatic coast, and a composite skeletal series from continental Croatia consisting of skeletons from Osijek, Vinkovci, Strbinci, and Zmajevac. The osteological series from continental Croatia are related to settlements located...
متن کاملFountain rainbows.
We present the first measurements of radiance spectra of rainbows. The bows on two sunny days (3 and 6 June 2008) were produced by the fountain in the Parque de las Ciencias, Granada, Spain, that consists of a rectangular perimeter of 40 spray nozzles. Optical thickness of the spray from each nozzle was approximately 0.5. Spectral purity of the primary bow was highest for orange and blue, reach...
متن کاملRainbows in the Hypercube
Let Qn be a hypercube of dimension n, that is, a graph whose vertices are binary n-tuples and two vertices are adjacent iff the corresponding n-tuples differ in exactly one position. An edge coloring of a graph H is called rainbow if no two edges of H have the same color. Let f(G, H) be the largest number of colors such that there exists an edge coloring of G with f(G, H) colors such that no su...
